WESTFIELDS GO THROUGH TO FIRST ROUND QUALIFYING IN THE FA CUP

Westfields continued their impressive start to the season with another 2-0 home win in the FA Cup on Saturday when they followed on from their victory over Brocton in the previous round to beat visiting Whitchurch Alport by the same score.

Westfields could have easily won more comfortably had it not been for the agility of the Whitchurch Alport goalkeeper Krystaine Burzynski who performed heroics in the visitors’ goal.

Westfields started at a cracking pace with neat tidy football and took the lead in the 18th minute when Ben Miller blasted home from outside the penalty area a sizzling shot which flew into the top corner of the net.

Westfields then had a great opportunity to go further ahead when Baidoo King burst through but he was thwarted by a fine save by Burzynski.

Westfields were carving open the big visitors’ defence and it came as no surprise when Westfields scored their second goal from a corner when Baidoo King raced forward and scored with a neat header at the near post.

Just before the interval Westfields had another great chance to go further ahead when King went clear through on goal with a one-on-one with the visitors’ keeper who again produced a full-length save to deny Westfields a further goal before the break.

After the interval Westfields played controlled soccer but again it was Burzynski who saved well from King who was a constant threat to the visitors’ defence all afternoon.

Westfields then introduced Sirdic Grant into the attack and he and Dan Stoneman both produced thrilling runs down their respective wings but Westfields could not beat Burzynski as he produced a Man of the Match performance.

Westfields also kept a clean sheet although Stephen Sarkodie was rarely troubled in the Westfields goal due to the fine defensive play of the back four of Olly Butler, Joel Edwards, Sam Rawlings and Henry Dyde.

Westfields now go forward to play Bishops Cleeve on Tuesday night in their opening Hellenic League Premier Division game of the season and next Saturday travel to Binfield, again in the Hellenic League Premier Division.
