JOE DAVIES AT THE DOUBLE IN BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND

Westfields’ central defender and current Player of the Year, Joe Davies, scored both on Saturday in Westfields’ 1-0 away win at Shawbury in the FA Vase and then repeated the exercise again in the Hellenic League Premier Division local derby with visiting Hereford Lads Club when he scored the only goal to put Westfields into second spot in the Hellenic League Premier Division.

Davies was impressive both as a central defender and then joined the attack and scored both match-winning goals over the Bank Holiday weekend to ensure Westfields had a bumper weekend.

Westfields started the weekend in the FA Vase away at Shawbury and in an end-to-end game Westfields ran out 1-0 winners when Davies secured an 85th minute goal when he joined the attack to stab over the line a left-wing corner that had not been cleared by the Shawbury defence and in a scramble Davies snatched the winner with just 5 minutes to go before a penalty shoot-out would have been required.

Earlier, both the Midland Football Alliance side, Shawbury, and Westfields had a number of chances but they went begging before Davies’ match-winner with just 5 minutes left on the clock to ensure Westfields went through to the Preliminary Round with an attractive away tie against Worcester Raiders on 24th September.

On Bank Holiday Monday in front of 387 fans at allpay.park, Westfields recorded their 4th consecutive league win with a 1-0 victory over Hereford Lads Club who travelled just 100yds from their headquarters to play this local derby.

Both sides attacked from the start but Steve Bell in the Lads Club goal twice kept out good efforts from Dan Stoneman and Steve Davies before Ian Havard at the other end kept Westfields in the game when he punched clear an in-swinging corner right under the crossbar.

Westfields took the lead just before the stroke of half time when from a right-wing corner Joe Davies darted in at the near post to flick the ball over the line to give Westfields an interval lead.

After the break both sides looked capable of scoring further goals but Bell in the Hereford Lads Club goal and Ian Havard in the Westfields goal both gave accomplished performances to keep their goals in tact.

Lads Club did hit back well at the end in search of an equaliser and it took a goal-line clearance from Kyle Cassell to prevent a late equaliser from the visitors whilst at the other end Bell cut out 2 dangerous crosses from Sean Powell and Dan Stoneman.

Westfields went on to secure the 3 valuable points and take them up into second position as the early pace-setters along with Cribbs from Bristol.

Westfields have no fixture on Saturday due to it being FA Cup day.
