MALVERN COME OUT ON TOP IN CUP DERBY
Malvern Town disposed of Westfields FC in the Hellenic League Wiseman Floodlit Cup 3rd Round tie with a 2-0 win at Malvern last night.
Westfields battled hard in the opening period and should have taken an early lead when Joel Ohuswa went through from a Harry Pitman cross but his shot was easily gathered by former Westfields custodian Keiran Blackburn.
Both defences were on top in the first half although Stoneman did get free on the right cut in but his shot again was gathered by Blackburn in the Malvern goal.
At the other end, Westfields’ keeper Matt Apperley was cautioned for crash tackling the Malvern striker and the 2 teams went in goal-less at the break.
However, it was Malvern who came out after the interval and scored in only the first minute of the second half when a left-wing corner was headed home by central defender Saunston. This gave impetus to Westfields to get back into the game and Blackburn saved at point-blank range with his legs as Westfields came back in search of an equaliser. However, their hopes were dashed in the 70th minute when a poor clearance by Matt Apperley only found Joe Bates on the edge of the penalty area and he crashed the ball back into the top corner of the net to give Malvern a gift 2-0 lead.
Westfields then introduced their substitutes in an effort to get back into the game but Malvern were slick and moved the ball around very well and maintained their unbeaten home record as Westfields crashed out of the cup with a 2-0 defeat.
Westfields now host Mangotsfield on Saturday, kick-off 3pm, at allpay.park.
