WESTFIELDS BEATEN AWAY AT LYDNEY
Westfields’ poor away form once again cost them victory away at Lydney on Saturday when they were beaten 3-0 by relegation-threatened Lydney Town in an Hellenic League Premier Division game.
Westfields’ away form, in which they have only won 3 of their last 9 league matches away from home, continued to be disappointing when they found Lydney Town to be a hard-working unit who completely outplayed them from start to finish.
In fact it took Lydney only 4 minutes to score their opening goal when Jordan Sheen raced through the Westfields defence and unleashed a powerful drive from the edge of the penalty area which beat Ian Havard and found the bottom corner of the net to give Lydney a dream start.
Westfields struggled to get into their stride and in the 25th minute they found themselves 2 goals down when a right-wing shot was deflected by Westfields skipper Kane Kahaki into his own goal to give Lydney a solid 2-0 start.
Westfields did come back and the Lydney keeper saved brilliantly from a Jamie Bird header and then a great drive from Harrison Iddles found the Lydney keeper well positioned to save.
After the break Westfields tried hard to get into their stride but found the heavy pitch not to their liking and with hard-working Lydney Town firm in defence, manager Phil Glover had to make changes to try and make an impression.
Cawley Cox, Ollie Butler and Ruslan Zakhardav all came on in an effort to spark a revival but it was the home side who increased their lead when Tom Baldwin beat the offside trap and raced through to score a fine solo goal and give Lydney a convincing 3-0 lead with 75 minutes on the clock.
Westfields could just not find a way through a strong Lydney side who looked far from relegation candidates and put together an impressive display to register 3 valuable points. The Forest of Dean side really caught Westfields out with a hard-working display from start to finish and thoroughly deserved their victory with a non-stop performance.
For Westfields, they now have 2 attractive home games to look forward to when they meet second in the table Bradford Town at allpay.park on Saturday 29th January and then on Saturday 5th February they entertain league leaders Bishops Cleeve, again at allpay.park.
