WESTFIELDS CLIMB UP TO 4th POSITION

Westfields climbed up to 4th in the Hellenic League Premier Division table when they had a convincing 5-2 away win over Calne Town on Saturday in Wiltshire.

Westfields created a host of goal-scoring chances and took an early lead in the 9th minute when Jamie Bird blasted home from the edge of the box to give Westfields a great start.

However, despite going close to increasing the lead it was the home side that hit back and drew level and after some good approach play Jamie Walters slid home the equaliser in the 37th minute.

However, Westfields hit back immediately and in the 40th minute Josh Hunt was awarded a penalty when he was clean through on goal and he was hacked by Calne central defender Matthew Hudson who received a red card and Hunt duly dispatched the penalty to put Westfields in front.

With Calne down to 10 men and struggling to keep pace with the quick-moving Westfields attack, Westfields increased their lead just on the stroke of half time when Jamie Bird fired home a terrific free kick from the edge of the penalty area after Stoneman had been pulled down outside the box.

With Westfields 3-1 up at the break it looked as though an avalanche of goals would come in the second half but it was not until the 61st minute that busy midfield player Harrison Iddles put Westfields 4-1 ahead and then 5 minutes later Dan Stoneman increased the lead to 5-1 as Westfields were in cruise control.

Calne did not give in and came back into the game when they were awarded a penalty in the 73rd minute which Derek Wheeler dispatched to give Calne some respectability.

Calne then tried hard to come back into the game and Matt Apperley in the Westfields goal produced a flying save to keep out a certain goal from close range before Westfields frittered away a couple of late chances when Cawley Cox, Jamie Bird and Dan Stoneman all had great opportunities to increase the score line.

However, the 5-2 score line was enough to hoist Westfields up into 4th position and next Saturday they travel away to Bristol Roman Glass for a league match and then return to allpay.park for the big Christmas derby when they face Lads Club on Monday 27th December, kick-off 3pm.
