WESTFIELDS SLIP UP
Westfields’ poor form continued when they were beaten 2-0 away at Brimscombe & Thrupp on Saturday in an important Hellenic League Premier Division game.
This extended Westfields’ poor run of form to just one win in their last six league outings which has left them off the pace in their bid to gain the second promotion play-off place.
Westfields got off to a great start when they should have taken a first-minute lead when a fine header at the far post by Josh Hunt went back across the goal but nobody could turn the ball home to give Westfields an opening goal.
Then in their first attack Brimscombe & Thrupp scored in the fourth minute when they got free down the right-hand side and a right-wing cross was put over and James Campbell came running in at the far post to head home a picture goal.
Westfields came immediately back and should have equalised mid-way through the half when Dan Stoneman, who had a fine game on the right wing, burst past two defenders and rounded the keeper but his shot into the empty net hit the crossbar and when the rebound came it was scrambled clear and Westfields had missed a golden opportunity.
Both sides had opportunities at either end but it was Westfields who really looked the sharper side but they could not turn their good approach work into goal scoring opportunities.
After the break Westfields again dominated the half but as in previous weeks they found their goal scoring opportunities were not taken and Jamie Bird fired wide from a good position and then new loanee striker Matt Reed also fired wide when well placed.
With Westfields pushing up to gain an equaliser they then conceded a sloppy goal in the final four minutes when a through ball came in between Joe Davies and Ian Havard which they left to each other and Harley Price nipped in to score an easy goal and put the score line beyond doubt in the home side’s favour.
Westfields had certainly not taken their chances again when good approach work was spoilt in the final third.
Westfields now face two more difficult fixtures in travelling to champions elect Bishops Cleeve tonight at Evesham, kick-off 7.45pm, and on Saturday play host to third place Westbury United at allpay.park, kick-off 3pm.
