Binfield 2 – McClurg, Povey
WESTFIELDS BEATEN AWAY
Westfields were well beaten 2-0 away at Binfield on Saturday when the home side gave an impressive strong performance against a Westfields side that had gone unbeaten all last season in the Hellenic League Premier Division.
However Binfield were ready for Westfields and took a lead in only the 4th minute when Westfields’ goalkeeper Steve Sarkodie made a hash of a clearance which went straight to Binfield player/manager James McClurg and he had the easy opportunity of putting the ball in the net.
Westfields tried hard to come back into the game but were kept out by a big, strong physical Binfield defence although on the half hour Westfields almost pulled level when overlocking fullback Olly Butler rifled a fine shot against the far post with the Binfield keeper well beaten.
Defences were on top in the first 45 minutes but after the break Binfield started the second half as they did the first half and scored within 3 minutes of the restart when a fine ball down the left hand side was sent across the face of the Westfields goal and Asa Povey raced in to tap the ball over the line from 6yds.
Westfields tried to come back and then introduced substitutes Sirdic Grant, Richard Greaves and Billy Murphy into the fray and this did see an improvement in their style of play and one or two more opportunities arose although Grant fired twice into the side netting and the home keeper was called into his first real save after 75 minutes when he kept out an effort from Baidoo King.
Westfields really could not break down the Binfield defence and with a crowd of 262 shouting on the home side Binfield looked formidable and it was only the agility of Steve Sarkodie who made a fine save from point-blank range to keep out a 3rd goal for the home side late in the game.
Westfields now play Worksop Town at home on Tuesday in the FA Cup First Round Qualifying and next Saturday are on the road again in the Hellenic League when they play their 3rd away game of the season away at Easington Sports.
