Westfields 1 – Iddles
Wantage Town 1 – Hawkins
WESTFIELDS HELD UP AT HOME
Westfields were held to a 1-1 draw by visiting Wantage Town on Saturday in the Hellenic League Premier Division when Westfields had to come from behind to secure a point.
It was the first ever meeting between the 2 sides, Wantage having been relegated from the Southern League Central last season and make their first ever visit to allpay.park. They wasted little opportunity in making their presence known when they took a 13th minute lead when a cross from the right-hand side was punched clear by Westfields’ keeper Ian Havard but only as far as Nathan Hawkins who headed the ball back over the keeper and into the empty net.
However, Westfields came storming back and equalised 6 minutes later when a neat move down the right-hand flank saw a cross from Kyle Cassell neatly tucked away by Harrison Iddles from 6yds to put the sides level.
Westfields then staged a good strong recovery and played exceptionally well at the back as Wantage came more into the game.
After the half-time break Westfields then stepped up a gear and had a number of opportunities to have gone into the lead when substitute Jack Gittoes and last season’s leading goalscorer Josh Hunt both had good chances to have put Westfields in front.
In an end-to-end game both sides looked to try and move forward to get the 3 points but great defensive work at either end saw both attacks snuffed out as Nathan Hawkins kept his defence in a tidy line at the Wantage rear guard and at the back for Westfields Joe Davies and Ben Vine both looked dominant.
Westfields now meet Malvern Town tonight, kick-off 7.45pm, and next Sunday travel to Worcester Raiders in the FA Vase Preliminary Round tie, kick-off 3pm, on Sunday 25th September, the game having been moved from a Saturday due to the Worcester Warriors having a rugby fixture.
