WESTFIELDS BACK TO WINNING WAYS

Westfields recovered after 2 league draws to return to winning ways on Saturday when they beat visiting Shrivenham 3-1 at allpay.park to maintain their 5th position in the league table.

However, Westfields had to recover from a 5th minute goal by the visitors who capitalised on a slow start by Westfields and when Sean Powell was dispossessed by Josh McGrory his pinpoint cross was headed home by Zac Skinner to put the visitors into a surprise 1-0 lead.

However, Westfields gradually got back into the game and after a few close efforts the lively Dan Stoneman and Archie Muirhead began to get into their stride and it was the duo that combined to put Westfields level in the 36th minute when Stoneman got free on the right and his accurate cross was turned home by Muirhead to put the 2 sides level just before the break.

After the interval Westfields began to dictate but couldn’t break down a stout visitors’ defence in which goalkeeper Sam Ayers was in sparkling form.

However, in the 75th minute it was again the same combination when Stoneman got free on the right and his cross was turned home by Archie Muirhead from close range in the 75th minute to put Westfields ahead.

Muirhead was then denied his hat-trick when his curling shot from the edge of the penalty area rattled against the upright with Ayres beaten in the visitors’ goal.

Westfields then introduced Josh Hunt into the attack from the substitutes’ bench along with Ryan Hillyer and Kyle Cassell and these 3 all added additional pace to the attack and it was no surprise when Stoneman capped a fine display with an 88th minute goal to settle the issue.

Stoneman was a constant thorn in the visitors’ side throughout the afternoon and deserved his goal when he shot home from 12yds to put the issue beyond doubt.

Earlier, Ian Havard had saved brilliantly from point-blank range as Shrivenham tried to get back into the game and Kane Kahaki and Joe Davies at the heart of the Westfields defence both gave solid displays.

Westfields now look forward to next Saturday when they are hosts at allpay.park to league leaders Cribbs, kick-off 3pm.
