WESTFIELDS BOUNCE BACK WITH RESOUNDING WIN

Westfields bounced back from their disappointing 1-0 home defeat to Thornbury Town on Monday with a resounding 5-1 away victory at Shrivenham on Saturday.

Westfields maintained their 4th place in the Hellenic League Premier Division and put together a workmanlike performance.

Recalled midfield dynamo Harry Pitman who was brought back into the side wasted no time in endorsing the manager’s decision to bring him back in when he scored after just 5 minutes when he tucked away a left-wing cross to put Westfields 1-0 ahead in the early stages.

Westfields were attacking down the slope at Shrivenham and increased their lead on 12 minutes when Adam Wakley fired home from close range.

Shrivenham then came back into the game and pulled a goal back when Callum Parsons dispossessed Adam Newbury on the edge of the Westfields penalty area and fired home a fierce drive which beat Matt Apperley in the visitors’ goal to bring back Shrivenham into the game.

However, Westfields soon restored their 2-goal advantage when Adam Wakley grabbed his second goal of the game to put Westfields 3-1 ahead and then moments later Josh Hunt headed home a left-wing cross to put Westfields 4-1 ahead at the break.

After the interval with driving rain Westfields maintained the pressure in atrocious conditions and Pitman provided a superb defence-splitting ball to Josh Hunt who rounded the home keeper to put Westfields into a resounding 5-1 lead.

Westfields maintained their defensive qualities with Ben Vine looking particularly impressive coming in for the injured Joel Edwards.

Westfields then introduced young substitutes Zac Johnson and Sam Griffiths late in the game along with Dale Richards who all performed admirably as Westfields recorded a fine 5-1 away win.

Westfields now meet Hereford Pegasus on Tuesday night in the Hellenic League Challenge Cup First Round tie and then on Saturday Westfields are at home to Royal Wootton Bassett, kick-off 3pm at allpay.park, Hereford in a Hellenic League Premier Division game.
