Roman Glass St George 0

Westfields 1 – Vine

Westfields beat the weather and indeed beat Roman Glass St George at Bristol on Saturday with a fine 1-0 away win over a hard-working Roman Glass St George side played on their 4G pitch at Almondsbury.

The match was an exciting affair from end to end with plenty of goalmouth action and both goalkeepers working overtime to keep the scoreline blank at the interval.

Both sides looked dangerous but both defences stood firm with Westfields’ defence in particular well-marshalled by skipper Sam Rawlings who performed superbly throughout the game.

After a goal-less first half Westfields began to make inroads but the home keeper twice made good long-range saves whilst at the other end Ian Havard went full-length twice to thwart Roman Glass as they bid to sneak a winner.

The winner came on the hour when Westfields’ central defender Ben Vine burst forward to intercept a clearance and let fly from 25yds with a shot which crashed into the roof of the net to give Westfields a 1-0 lead.

The home side then came back at Westfields and Havard twice made good saves and then both Ben Vine and Sam Rawlings got in good clearances as Westfields defended superbly.

Both sides put on substitutes in an effort to bring fresh legs into the game but it was Westfields who performed best on a bitterly cold afternoon to record 3 points and to keep them in 4th position in the league table.

Westfields now meet Malvern Town away on Tuesday night in the Wiseman Floodlit Cup 3rd Round and then on Saturday Westfields are at home to Mangotsfield in the Hellenic League Premier Division, kick-off 3pm at allpay.park.
