Long Eaton United win 5-4 on penalties

WESTFIELDS GO OUT FROM THE PENALTY SPOT

Westfields went out of the 4th Round of the FA Vase on a penalty shoot out after drawing 1-1 with Long Eaton away in Derbyshire on Saturday.

It was a big disappointment to the Hereford side as they had led for almost an hour and Long Eaton scored in the second minute of injury time to force a penalty shoot-out.

After both sides had taken 5 penalties each the score remained at 4-4 and then with the sudden death penalties the home side went ahead 1-0 and then Billy Murphy saw his spot kick saved by Jake Askew in the Long Eaton goal to cause wild scenes by the home club.

Earlier, Billy Murphy had seen a good shot saved by Askew and then Westfields took the lead in the 30th minute when Dan Stoneman beat 2 men on the right flank and cut inside the penalty area before firing low across the goalkeeper to put Westfields ahead.

The second half saw few chances created by Westfields who tended to sit back and let the home side come at them and it was the home side who eventually scored deep into injury time when after a lot of pressure Kameron Campbell raced onto a through ball and tucked it under the advancing Steve Sarkodie to force a penalty shoot-out.

Westfields didn’t get off to a very good start with their penalty shoot-out when Sam Hunt hit the crossbar in the opening penalty and although Sarkodie then made a save to put the sides level at 4 each it was the home side, Long Eaton, who went into the 5th Round and gave disappointment to Westfields.
