WESTFIELDS’ SIX MATCH UNBEATEN RUN ENDS

Westfields travelled to Fairford Town on Saturday and were beaten 2-0 as Fairford got their revenge for the 5-4 defeat they suffered at Westfields only 2 weeks previously.

Westfields were on a good run of 6 matches unbeaten but the Fairford side were strong, committed and defended well, particularly their goalkeeper who earned a Man of the Match display.

Westfields were without defender Sam Hunt who was still out following the injury sustained in midweek but Luke Sylvester came in at left back in an otherwise unchanged team.

Westfields enjoyed a good start and Dan Stoneman twice caught the eye with good runs but his finishing was well dealt with by the home keeper.

Fairford took the lead slightly against the run of play when Allando Davis was on hand to score the opening goal midway through the half but Westfields still had chances to draw level when Matt McDonald fired powerfully at the home keeper and then again Dan Stoneman was thwarted when his effort was again well saved.

Fairford defended well with Matt Sysum, the ex Westfields central defender, keeping a watchful eye on Richard Greaves and Josh Hunt.

Fairford then increased their lead from a right-wing corner when Robbie James was allowed a free header and scored powerfully past Ian Havard to put the Fairford team into a commanding 2-0 lead.

After the break Westfields again took up the running and Stoneman was causing all sorts of problems on the right-hand side and Westfields twice hit the Fairford woodwork before substitute Cawley Cox again had a tremendous header which bounced off the crossbar and appeared to go over the line but the referee waved aside the Westfields appeals.

Westfields threw everything forward in the last 10 minutes and Luke Sylvester hit the post from an acute angle and the home keeper twice made good saves to keep out the Westfields side and keep a firm grip on the 3 points that they’d earned from their first-half display.

Westfields had attacked well but were just guilty of not taking their gilt-edged chances which could have got them a point and preserved their unbeaten run.

On Saturday Westfields are at home to Lydney Town, kick-off 3pm, at allpay.park and the following Tuesday Westfields travel to Kington Town in the First Round of the HFA County Senior Challenge Cup, kick-off 7.45pm at Kington.
